Power projects awarded international health and safety certification

2007-04-03 - ABB South Africa's Power Technologies Systems (PTS) division has been awarded an OHSAS 18001 health and safety management system certification -- the first such international certificate for projects in the company.

The South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) presented the certification to ABB in March after three years of planning and implementing the health and safety management system to cover all projects.

Carl Watson, manager responsible for the PTS division, accepted the listing certification on behalf of the company.

''We are honoured to receive this listing certificate,'' said Watson. ''It's a great accomplishment mainly because of the complexity of recording and controlling many aspects for projects running on multiple sites. Hard work and determination of the team involved in preparing for certification made this possible.''

The OHSAS 18001 listing covers health and safety management systems, training, procedures and processes at PTS offices in Sunninghill and all sites where it runs projects such as at Tutuka Power Station, Kriel Power Station and other customer operations.

The team responsible for implementing the OHSAS 18001 systems included Carl Watson, Rob Grindley, Paul Lavery, Andries Beytell, Johan Wasserman, all the PTS project managers and SHE (Safety, Health and Environment) representatives. The certification extended to an ABB subcontractor, Dynamic Instruments, who was audited by the SABS at the ABB site at Tutuka Power Station as part of the overall audit.

Andries Beytell, SHE manager, PTS, was the advisor during the three-year implementation of the project.
